How to avoid being trapped in a niche.

Bang! Bang! Bang! The hammer comes down again and again, nailing those wooden planks in place. Finally, it’s done: you’re trapped. No windows, and the only door nailed shut. Those business gurus told you to pick a niche, and so you did. And now you’re stuck there, for the rest of your days. G’bye creativity. G’bye freedom. G’bye.Does a niche really give your creativity a death sentence? Well, sure, a -niche- can kill your creativity. But, you might’ve mis-heard. ‘Cause it’s not a niche you’re wanting, it’s a problem.A niche is a “specialized but profitable corner of the market.” For instance, providing valves for industrial manufacturing is a niche. A niche is also an ecological term: “A position or role taken by a kind of organism within its community.”The thing about a business niche is that the ecology of the market can change, and your niche can go away. Not to mention feeling stuck just pumping out those valves (so to speak.)The difference between a niche and a problem. A niche is aimed at something that exists, a physical manifestation of the market. A problem is something that continues to exist, even when the market changes. For instance, if you are in […]

Sign With Your Baby Training Video - (ASL) Baby Sign Language (VHS Video only)

Sign With Your Baby Training Video - (ASL) Baby Sign Language (VHS Video only) Joseph Garcia is not out to make babies smarter; he simply wants to help them communicate earlier. Based on his book of the same name, this 62-minute tape shows parents how to teach their prespeaking tots simple signs to indicate their needs and thoughts, thus avoiding the common frustration of a baby who understands language but cannot use it. Several sets of parents and babies demonstrate Garcia’s lessons, which he breaks up into chapterlike segments, complete with recaps at the end of each. Garcia guides parents from beginning efforts, such as teaching 7- to 10-month-olds signs for “eat,” “milk,” and “more,” to more complex concepts such as “help” and “pain,” allowing for plenty of variation along the way. His no-pressure attitude is reinforced by clips of his classes with parents and children, while an early-childhood-development expert and speech pathologist add their support of his methods. Included at the end is a 13-minute sign “dictionary” with codes for easy reference. –Kimberly Heinrichs

The Inconvenient Truth About Your Time

If you were to be asked what matter most to you, you would likely say family, relationship, and maybe spirituality, which are the 3 topmost things that most people would likely say as well. But if you were to honestly and humbly examine how you expend your effort on a daily basis, you will likely find that most of it is geared with a remarkable imbalance towards your career, business, and a host of other not-so-important things like hobbies; movies, TV sitcoms and reality shows; video and computer games; and Internet surfing, Facebook, MSN, chat rooms, and pitifully, pornography. Even without referencing any survey, no one would argue that the world is wasting way too much time than ever before (and yet we complain of not having enough time). We fool ourselves by thinking that the expectations people have of us are unrealistic when all the while we are fully engaged in inconsequential activities that require much more time and effort. We keep saying that our children are the future and yet keep manufacturing things that are not helping them better prepare for the future; we ignorantly applaud the electronic gadgets that instill an extremely high level of competition in them, things […]
